If you do smoke, have you ever tried quitting? If so, what methods have you used? And for those who don't smoke, have you ever tried it? If so, why?

I have the occasional cigar.
For non-smokers, smoking a cigarrette can temporarily increase your concentration. I have read that a few places, and it seems to help me calm down and focus before I do a large oral presentation or something. I don't really enjoy smoking cigarrettes though. Anyway. Now that I've made a rather boring post. I'll go.

Actually, it, in the way of drugs, only gives you the impression of being more aware. Sure, due to the emotional context, it might actually calm you, but it does not increase your focus (it may even decrease it).

I think the reason people say smoking calms you down before doing anything is not because of the cigarette, but the fact that you are doing a breathing excercise.

I have a friend who used to smoke marijuana before exams because it helped him concentrate. Drugs react differently for different people. Anywho...I don't smoke cigarettes, but I have tried them. They're not my thing, but I think that people definitely have the right to smoke if they want to. I prefer marijuana, though I don't smoke it much anymore. Actually, I haven't smoked it at all in almost a year.

But did your friend actually do better? Marijuana is noted for practically removing short term memory. An extreme few are simply not affected by a symptom of drugs, though, so your friend could be one of those. But its gambling with the worst odds I've seen so far. Well, I can't argue that people don't have the right to smoke -- from a cynical view point, a right is anything we can actually do.

But did your friend actually do better? Yup. But seriously, I take anti-depressents that are far more harmful than marijuana, and they're legal, so the world is pretty much "governed" by a bunch of idiots.

Yeah......can't argue with that. ;D However, anti-depressants do have a pay off for the majority of people who take them. I don't think the price is worth it personally, though.

Weird. I was just about to post something on smoking. This is actually a habit that I started late November. I'm up to about 6 clove cigarettes (yummier than normal cigarettes), which (although filtered in my case) equal about a pack of regulars a day. All of my friends are waiting for me to start hacking up blood. I'm sure you all needed that visual. On concentration: No. I have more intensity, but not concentration. It's a very weird combination in my brain. In fact, I'm smoking right now and I keep having to rethink my words. But it's nothing like smoking the Mary Jane, as I've also admitted to doing on this board. Concentration is GONE with that stuff. It could also be that I just have an attention disorder that's more noticeable when I smoke cloves, but who knows. On calm: I have a lot of anxiety and depression that I'm dealing with now. The cloves, which do not replace any decent med that could help me, at least give me something to focus on. As Tara said, it is a breathing exercise (it also feeds a bit of an OCD issue - I'm full of self-diagnosed mental problems). Most of the reason I got hooked was because I liked the inhale-exhale. I had actually been doing a lot of weed in October-early November, but it takes too much time for me to feel calm, or any affect. I like having the quick calm fix of a cigarette. It's also better for me to smoke if I'm trying to get a job (which I am). On quitting: So far I've only tried quitting for one day cold turkey, but the next day I bought more and decided I would work on quitting after I stopped PMSing and/or got a job. Heh...

Oh, and the thing I was going to post about was that I just found out that there are going to be candy-flavored cigarettes out. Link here. What I find funny is that they are saying that no adult would want candy flavor, but oh are they wrong. Though I don't know how much I count as an adult, being only 22.

However, anti-depressants do have a pay off for the majority of people who take them. I don't think the price is worth it personally, though. Actually, anti-depressents can make you even more depressed, as well as suicidal, but they do help a fair amount of people...one being my mother, who, without zoloft, would still be in an institution. So believe me, if you felt the way I do a lot of the time, you might just rethink that, even given all the possible side-effects. You know, people always ask me if I'm fine, but I never am. I hate lying, but I don't really like to talk about it all the time, or with just anybody. Anywho...candy-flavoured cigarettes, eh? lol I know a couple of people who'll be in line for some of those.

Actually, I am a weird sort of depressant myself...though I don't feel depressed. I just feel almost nothing but tired, or not tired. The ironic thing is that I am "just fine", but never more than "just." I was thinking that, personally, the risks outweigh the problem. I definitely believe I would rethink if I was in a similar situation to yours. My dad, who has a similar problem, is going to start taking medicine, as (shhhh) a bit of a guinea pig (ahem, "lab rat") for me. They say adults won't like candy flavored cigarettes......that's almost as flagrant as their idea of selling cigarettes in an ice cream truck........

Oh I socially smoked for a while, meaning if someone was I would too, but it's an expensive habit. Not to mention, it bothers my brothers asthma. There are days I get cravings though.
I do not want to deprive anyone of the right to smoke, just as long as it's away from someone who might be bothered by it.

Amalcas: The people *against* the new cigarettes are the ones saying that adults wouldn't like them. The cigarette companies are trying to refute that. I do agree that this new idea is really f-ing appealling to teens and younger, but as someone a bit older, I would switch to regulars if they tasted like berry.
