I say if every other word coming out of your mouth is a swear then you're desperatly in need of a lesson in vocabulary. I think it's alright if curse words are used in a way in which you are expressing strong feelings. Like for example, a lot of people would swear if they've hurt themselves. That's fine. But I think if you are trying to belittle and downgrade others, then I don't think it's nice.

You've never heard of a person's reputation being damaged by things they haven't even heard? what does that have to do with anything? I said that words have no more power than the listener[/b] gives them. The person who hears the words is the one that controls the power the words have. NOT the person speaking the words. Speakers can (and do) manipulate human nature and deliberatly choose wording that will most likely get the reaction they want. But that does not mean that the words are given any more power than the listener gives them. Do you believe everything you are told? Why not? because you limit the power of the words you are hearing.

My four year old daughter is currently at the stage where she is repeating everything she hears...at the most inconvient times possible.

That's another way of learning to hold back. Good for you.

I prefer to see it as learning control of oneself.

Being a newcomer to the forum I can say that word restraint is warranted on such a site as this, because some people do take offense to swearing/cussing/fowl language. I personally don't take offense unless it directed towards me but that's another topic. Besides excercise in restricting such impulsive tendencies makes room for development of clearer expressions of ideas and stimulates the thought processes.
