Other than a desperation that we cannot storm that city personally and save those folks...

The hurricane just barely missed Texas; while I feel lucky it didn't hit us, I also feel terrible for the people it did hit. Again, the dark side of human nature is showing in the looters that take advantage of a horrible situation like this; I heard that the military is now trying to restore stability.

Ophelia you must also remember what a terrible terrible shock it is to a person's system to go through that. No doubt, we'd all be going through similar reactions. People in the superdome dying and just no where to put them. Having to put up with the smell. Prisoners in the superdome, harming young women...and the cops leaving them .
It's a hellish story , period. I'd have looted. I wouldn't have got a tv, I would have thought about it. After all, what if someone got a generator somewhere so they could find out what's going on? What if your baby was starving, your children were starving, and you needed food. Your survival comes first. You have no money, you have no house. You're roaming through very VERY filthy water.(Your child just stepped near a body, how do you prepare him for that? Your shoes are ruined by water, do you take them off and chance stepping on something sharp or go into an abandoned store and get another pair, possibly several for others you see nearby) I mean, how can we be so quick to judge about looting when we don't know how quickly our own sanity would fall away? And I would have got a gun too. There's gators in the water, and snakes too. I wouldn't let them hurt anybody. Besides, maybe you could trade the gun for something..food from someone, perhaps. I know that the media doesn't want anyone to think about that, it's far more newsworthy to make it out like they're people not worth saving.
But it's against humanity, it's against humanity to let those people stay there.

Hello Everyone;
I have been shocked to watch the trajedy unfold in the gulf states of Lousiana,Mississippi, and Alabama. Mother Nature is ferocious at times and it seems we humans are just in the way. I do not believe the pictures we see give an accurate portrayal of the human suffering. it is staggering to say the least.
I am glad that they are focusing on the rescue now instead of the blame game. The media has taken that topic to new heights of amazement. There wil be plenty of time later to look at what could have been done to get to those folks sooner and at least get bare essentials on the ground.
There is a lot being said about the dark side of people coming out. There are always going to be a few bad eggs in the group. The focus needs to be on the good that is coming out of people also. The devastation is staggering but the aid coming in now looks very hopeful for immediate needs and down the road. All human beings are our brothers and sisters. We all need to help in best way we can.

We've all been talking, but what about our actions? Have we been doing anything to help the victims or do you think we should have no such duty?

we don't have much but we've donated money. Some grocery stores will match your donation..say you donate five dollars, they'll donate five along with it. I will say people have done more donated more, than our own government has.(by that I mean we acted quicker seems like) I don't think we have a "duty". As in no one can make you do anything where this is concerned.. and if you were made to then...I don't know doesn't seem right somehow.
Truth is I wish I just felt better- several years ago I helped when the major tornadoes went through Moore Oklahoma. After seeing it on tv I just needed to help and I got to help and I felt better. Here I haven't had that chance.

I've helped get school supplies and backpacks for kids who are temporarily coming to Texas schools.
