Man. You're right littlepea. Why is it we are always made out to be the bad ones? It's probably because it could be true that people really do prefer their own race above others. But still, that's dumb. In reality, I don't think it makes much sense. You have a good eye littlepea.

it was just the way they were worded ... for the black guy it was "looted from a grocery store" for the white people it was "found from a grocery store" ... how do you find something from something anyway? you can find it in something or outside something, you can't find it from something ...

You know what? I am beginning to think that it's just that. Most people there could not get out because they did not have cars. The elderly could not get out. They tried to spin it as if they were too stupid or stubborn to get out. Well it's because they were too poor too, period.

They are saying that Kanye? West pointed this out last night at a NBC concert, and that he said "George Bush doesn't like/hates black people" but that it was edited out of the west coast feed.
Look, I don't blame the man at all for thinking it, and that bothers me deeply. I am not racist, I love everybody just the same, and I don't understand this government's reaction, or the media's reaction to this looting.. my god, they've just witnessed hell there... and you'd be out of your damn mind too. Let them get food for their babies, Let them get water for their babies, and they don't have that anymore. It makes me so upset this racist spin. Heck even I see it.
But I'd like you to know that here in Dallas where the people from this have come, we've got people opening up their homes for them to come live with them, for a warm bed to sleep in, a home cooked meal. We're not going to let them down.

Responsibility for aid falls to the state first. I have not been impressed with Governor Blanco. It seems Louisiana had no plan for disaster other than to tell people to evacuate.

The money to finish the levees went to the war in Iraq in 2003. NOLA was always a place I wanted to go, infact a few weeks ago I mentioned it on here.. anyway... I listen to a lot of talk radio, yes I'm a dork, but I'd rather listen to the radio than watch television.. as far as I can gather.. a great lot of the city relied on the bus transportation system. Meaning they had no cars. They also were very poor too, not to mention the elderly that probably also, have no way of getting around or getting out of their homes. Sure you have the occasional "I'm going to ride this one out" but I doubt it was very many. There were several people in cars trying to get out of the city, but simply sat there for hours and found out they were going no where fast.
I've heard the rumor that Nagin did in fact call the busses and for the people to be at spots for them to be picked up either Saturday or Sunday evening. I don't know if it was abandoned for the superdome idea or what.
I've also heard a racist bent in some of the callers calling into this radio station, and so have the djs.. "They should have got a better education , then they could have got out of there" , " I'm not giving them anything, they've stolen" ....that's the lightest, because I'm sure the call screeners drop a whole lot.
A picture can say a thousand words, or rather, two pictures. Do I think it's fair that Kanye said George Bush hated black people? No, but he doesn't have a good track record with meeting with african american groups, and when he's already got a rep this sure doesn't help him.
As for Blanco and Nagin, I don't know how to feel. But I do feel that our government will drop everything to help another country, but it's response this time was slow.

Pandora, I love your heart, but you are viewing this through the eyes of the media, and seeing just what they want you to see. Nagin had no trouble ordering enforced evacuation when the storm surge threatened -- but by then it was too late. I have a friend down there who says they were permitted to stay and weather the storm, but they were ordered out for the surge. A lot of those initial busses went empty. They all knew the levies could only withstand a Category 3. There should have been enforced evacuation earlier. All that said, much is being done to provide relief to the area. You are allowing yourself to be influenced by a false media. Even before the hurricane made landfall, the mobilization of aid was well underway: "The outpouring of aid, possibly the largest the US has ever seen to cope with a domestic natural disaster, stems from Katrina's imposing size as well as its destination so near the major population center of New Orleans."Big relief effort meets KatrinaThe President declared a state of emergency well in advance of the strike. That is unprecedented.

If it's true that all this aid was coming, then why was the mayor outraged enough to swear so much? Are you saying that that is false media as well?

No. I am saying that he was short-sighted, and made a mistake in not making evacuation mandatory.

And not finding ways to provide transportation for those who were too poor to afford it?

My understanding from my friend is that the busses were available and running... I dunno... Shelters are certainly available. Did you see Shalom's post about people being moved to Utah?
I did hear on TV someone saying that due to false alarms in the past, many who were poor just didn't take this as seriously as they should have. Apparently in the past, they had evacuated only to have nothing happen except loss of work/pay and the incurred costs of living elsewhere... plus the hassle. So they gambled... and lost a lot more as a result.
No matter how poor I get, if I want to live, I'm evacuating when they say to. And if I don't, I'm accepting the consequences.
