Does anyone here use natural herbs for healing or has anyone ever thought about it? I was thinking of looking into that out of curiosity. What are the benefits of such?

My dad is big into that... problem is, every three years or so he finds out that what he's been doing for the past three years has been shown to do more harm than good!
But by then, they're saying a different herb does even better... so he switches...
(Sounds like a way to sell herbs to me!)

My mom takes a loooooot of herbal remedies. But she makes sure to keep updated on the herbal front about new products and such. She also doesn't use them as a replacement for medical remedies that she really needs, just as supplements.
Though I'm not as into the herbal scene, mainly because I loathe taking them in pill form and find it hard to incorporate random herbs into my diet, I have learned some important herbs that occasionally keep me level-minded such as Kava Kava (a very mild anti-depressant) and Ginseng. Those two are definitely worth keeping around in anyone's house.

You know what I don't understand? How can there always be something new in the herbal medicines if many ancient cilivations have used things that seemed to be working fine?

I don't know, my mother used to make me take St. John's Wort for depression. Didn't work worth a tinkers you know what.
We do take Echinacea(sp?) and a few other things around here from time to time just to check them out.

Perhaps it is because different things work for different people?

I have a remedy that I SWEAR by! The first day I feel the slightest inkling of cold symptoms, and every subsequent day until it's gone, I take 2 echinacea in the morning, 2 in the afternoon, and 2 right before bed along with a chewable Vitamin C tablet, a multivitamin and two Tylenol.
Works like a charm. Most times, the cold is gone by day 2. The longest I hold onto it is about 4 days and in either case, the symptoms are very mild.
It might just be that the stuff works really well with my body chemistry, but it hasn't let me down yet.

I rarely have the need to take medication. But I think for a time when I feel sick or something, I'll try something different. Whenever I do take medication (which is rare) it works really well. I remember discovering I had the flu at school one day. I went home and rested and took some TheraFlu and the next day I was able to go back. Not that I wanted to.
