Does anyone think spanking children is harmful to their upbringing?

It probably is to some level. But sometimes punishment is neccessary. I just wouldn't reccomend it as a first choice.

I would never spank. There are alternatives that are less harmful and that work more efficiently.

I don't think so. I didn't need it growing up all you had to do was take something away from me.
It is a last resort. Not the first choice, ever .
Nor is it the only alternative you have, either.

I believe it is okay when it is necessary, but only use the hand. Don't believe in using anything else on a child like a fly swatter, belt, shoe, tree branch ..No way..The Methotist church I went to believed it was okay to do that stuff as it was in the bible to disapline, but I don't think God meant to beat your child like they do..That is another reason I left they believed to much that I never did..

No its not evil. Its good to beat the hell outa your kids from time to time. My dad taught me not to steal that way. I got my bare butt beat with a wooden stick, and ever sence I aint stole nothin. Thats how a good father teaches his kid. None of that sentamental BS, just straight up good ass whoopin, and you show your kid you love em.

Spanking is wrong because a) It's physical violence/abuse. b) It can teach some children to be abusive. c) There are other methods of 'punishment' (for lack of a better word). -- Spanking works out of fear. I'd want my child to know that stealing is wrong because of moral reasons, not because I'd beat his or her ass.

I do not believe that spanking is evil. I believe it is a last resort punishment. I have heard from many how it is so much better to put the child into a corner for a 'time out'. Where was this when I was growing up?!
