Matthew 5:48
Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
I read this verse and it kind of made me go icon_thinking1.gif.
Being perfect.. that's impossible for us isn't it? As I thought about it more, I figured it meant that the more we strive to become like God, the more "perfect" we become.. but it must be more than that and what is "perfect" anyways?
Also, I had always thought that Jesus was always perfect. But from what I understand, Hebrews says different:
Hebrews 5:7-9
During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him..
it says that Jesus was made perfect. What's that mean exactly? The way I take it is that Jesus had to develop (not really the word I'm looking for) His character in order to fully carry out God's plan... He had to learn through all His sufferings to be "perfect" [in character]. just like how we should develop our character, or be "perfect in our character."
This verse also seems to make sense with what I'm thinking:
Romans 8:17
Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
could the "share in his sufferings" also relate to sharing in his sufferings so that we, too, can be made perfect?
