There are quite a few pieces that I like from composers such as Beethoven. I don't know very many people who haven't come across some sort of classical piece from either Beethoven or Mozart. Well, I just wanted to say that one of my favorite pieces is Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven. click here for a link to a midi. What about everybody else around here? Are there any pieces that really speak to you or any that you really like?

I like tons of stuff, but remembering the names is a bit harder. Fur Elise is a great one (a bit over done at little kid recitals, but still good). O Fortuna by Carl Orff is really cool I get images of major mid evil battles whenever I hear it.
While not from that era I think that John Williams is one of the greats.

moonlight sonata is one of my all-time favourites too i like learning classical pieces on guitar, cos they sound really cool and are often very impressive. i used to be able to play the whole of moonlight sonata on guitar (sounded really nice on my classical guitar with nylon strings) and i can play bits of mozart's piano sonata no.11 in A maj "alla turca" (the piano thing near the beginning of The Truman Show that he's listening to in his car). that one's really really impressive on guitar ... i can also play canon in d major and an abridged version of tocatta and fugue in D minor by bach (sounds immense on my electric with tonnes of distortion and reverb ) my favourite classical piece is winter by vivaldi (part of his 4 seasons - each part is amazing, but winter is my fav.) ... need to get round to learning that one on guitar too, though i don't think i could do it justice ...

I too, like to learn classical pieces, but I have more experience with the keyboard than with the guitar. (although when I was learning guitar, I seemed to pick it up pretty quick. I only stopped b/c my guitar at home needed a new string, and I was picky about that.) The classical piece I'm currently working on is "One Man's Dream" ( click here to listen to a midi) It's another one of my favorites. I can't wait until I fully learn the song. I usually learn by ear. I don't do notes, although if I were to go somewhere with music, I'd force myself to learn them.

I really like "Missa Apostolorum" by Claudio Merulo and "Rise Up My Love, My Fair One" by Imant Raminsch
