So many people that I've spoken to about music have their own definitions of what constitues for 'musical talent'. After all, we each listen to a certain kind of music and that often depends on how we feel, how we wish to feel, setting the tone for a certain atmosphere, etc. What is musical talent to you?

There are different types. There's the type that can make a pleasant sound. There's the type that can repeat something after hearing it only once. There's the type that can compose new music.
But my favorite type is the kind that can bring tears to my eyes and touch my heart.

"Music is the food of the soul." I'll agree with Diana here: Give me what pulls the heartstrings. ;D

some people like music that sounds good, and lets face it, who doesn't, but i play guitar and i have no respect for those guitarists who can't play well live ... i suppose the prime example is john frusciante. yes, he's composed some awesome music with the red hot chili peppers (though not recently ... ) but he is absolutely shocking in every live show i've seen or heard him play. contrast this with dave navarro who has composed fewer awesome tracks (with janes addiction or the chilis) but he sounds amazing when he plays live - i have infinitely more respect for him than john. that's my only quibble, other than that i'm pretty open minded

No matter what genre of music, it must make me feel something to enjoy it. The bland "My gal left me, my dog left me, baby please take me back, I'm the right guy/girl for you and you know it, even if you have a girlfriend/boyfriend" songs get very old.
When you have to have a computer come in to clean up your voice, then to me that says you have no musical talent.

lol Pandora, you're reminding me of country music. I heard when you play country music backwards, you get your wife back, your dog back, your truck back...lol (no offense to anyone) I have no problem with it. When it comes to music I like, then it's really about the individual songs. It's not always about genre. If it sounds good and if there's words, and they're good to, then I have no problem.
I generally like anything that'll put me (or keep me) in a good mood. But I prefer people who can actually play the instruments or has a nice voice where you don't have to edit it. That's real talent. It really all depends on the individual genre. If it's rap, you've got to come out with your own words and a unique and clever beat. If it's New Age, and you're the vocalist, I don't want anything glossed over. If you're doing music with instrumentals, you've got to be damn good at it. So basically, if you say you're good at something, let's see the proof!

You've gotta be able to find the right kind. And a lot of people say it's negative, but just think where the inspiration for such music came from. The hard life that many have gone through. Music is normally an expression of how an artist feels or about their lifestyle. When you've come from a place where people think negatively of themselves and each other and it's all they've known, what do you expect?

To me, som many different things constitute talent. It depends on the genre in some cases, but I'll listen to almost any genre, myself. The types of music I don't like are the songs that sound like some boring overused formula just so the artist knows they can sell records with it and doesn't take chances. I like music that sounds different from what I've heard before.

I don't mind someone writing a song about the life they've lived and the circumstances they went through..that's fine, what I mind is when a song gloryfies violence. But, I also know where the dial is if I don't like something.

Yeah, it can seem that way if it's the only life you know.

Another thing I hate is lyrics that are so cliched, that when you're hearing the song for the first time, you can guess correctly at what the next line is going to be before hearing it. Sorry if that doesn't make much sense ;D

Oh man I hate that! Like I used to love Nickelback, but their songs sound so much alike!
