I've seen a lot of news reports about Warren Jeffs and the FLDS group he is running.
Details of what he may or may not have done aside. Should plural marriage be legal in the US?
On what grounds should it be legal or illegal?
and what sort of regulations should be used to control it?

Before I can go into that, I will need to find out why it was made illegal to begin with. IT may take me a awhile to find anything. I been sick and am in dire need to catch up with my school work...
If I have not responded in a few days send me a PM and remind me.

Well I can provide a quick and as far as I know fairly accurate run down. Plural marriage has been practiced by many groups over the years. Men having more than one wife is fairly common where as a women having more that one husband is vary rare. Islam permits it, as have many other religions including Jewish tradition. In the mid 1800's some of the Mormons where also taking more than one wife and at as far as I know that was the triggering event to have it outlawed in the US. This was motivated by "morals" or hatred of Mormons depending on your point of view. A teacher once told me that the laws where never enforced on those practicing polygamy in the Eastern states. Given that our nation is no longer in the business of imposing morels on others (at least in theory). I think this topic is going to be a major legal issue to rival Roe vs. Wade by the time it is settled. 'link'Also en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polygamy

teancum aren't you a mormon or latter day saint (aren't they the same thing ) if so polygamy is permitted. Anyways I think polygamy should only be acceptable ONLY if the first wife does not mind her husband getting another wife AND he has the means to support his wives and they children that they will have - I dont agree with polygamy if the husband is poor and on benefits and has to scrounge off the state to support his family. If her husband and her are fine with the idea then why not? Who is that state to interfere with the love lifes of its citizens? As homosexuality was at one point illegal I think the time will come when polygamy will become legal.

I am. contrary to popular rumor polygamy was not practiced by every other guy in the church back in the day.
from Jacob chapter 2
27 Wherefore, my brethren, hear me, and hearken to the word of the Lord: For there shall not any man among you have save it be one wife; and concubines he shall have none;
28 For I, the Lord God, delight in the chastity of women. And whoredoms are an abomination before me; thus saith the Lord of Hosts.
29 Wherefore, this people shall keep my commandments, saith the Lord of Hosts, or cursed be the land for their sakes.
30 For if I will, saith the Lord of Hosts, raise up seed unto me, I will command my people; otherwise they shall hearken unto these things.
Our religious beliefs do allow for the practice only under direct command from the Lord. As it is currently against the law and following the law is something we believe in it is not practiced.

yes I am a Mormon/Latter-day saint.
There is a lot of polygamy being practiced. It is illegal though and a source of some concern.

So the reason it was made illegal in the first place is because group a wanted to rile up group b?

I have no doubt that many found the practice to be immoral, but the laws where (as far as I know) only enforced on the Mormons who where one of the most unpopular groups at the time.
Take Buchanan's blunder. One judge gets upset because he is not liked socially. (This primarily do to his living among a bunch of people who aspire to high moral standards and his total lack of them.) So he gets the president convinced that the Mormons are going to rebel and what not and the US army marches out to solve the problem. Anyhow long story short they where just doing their thing planting crops building buildings and raising families, but the government was quite quick to believe anything negative about them.
