This is one of those lessons you get in school that you never forget, ever. Emmett was murdered for whistling at a white woman-he was only a teenager. The sheriff did not want his murderors found, in fact he tried to get Emmett buried quickly, but his mother would have none of it..she had a picture taken of Emmett's remains and left the casket open so that no one could run away from what been done to her son. Unfortunately justice was not given to Emmett, but the case has been reopened, and his grave has been exhumed. I'm really upset that it took this long-for one, even if the persons responsible did go to jail, they're frail old women/men and they won't stay on this earth long enough to serve a proper sentance. I heard anout that story last year on NPR and that is one I won't forget. If I were the mother, I'd do the same exact thing. Taking pictures and making the funeral open-casket to show people that racial hatred still exists and this is what we are left with if it isn't dealt with correctly.
