I know the French government had this thing where students were not allowed to wear anything religious to school, this included symbols and scarves and such. When I first heard of that, I felt... why? I mean, I can see one reason being that they don't want any religious fights at school and they want everyone to be seen at perhaps an equal level...but... If school is there to prepare you for life, shouldn't people understand that there is a chance that you will be working with someone who comes from a different background than you? But then again, let's think. If the French government did indeed do the right thing, what do you think the reactions of the students when they get older and see these symbols would be? I mean, I was thinking that perhaps religious intolerance issues really won't change for the better unless people have the chance to be exposed to each other and have the opportunity to discuss it with each other. I mean, who the hell knows?

I don't know, I do know they meant well. But people regardless of wearing material symbols will still show the internal merits of their belief.

there was quite a lot about this in the british press (seeing as we're only separated from France by 25 miles of water) - apparently they wanted to ban the symbols to try and encourage France's identity as a secular state ... it all sounds a bit commie to me, though.
in Europe there's a lot of hubbub about the ECHR - the European Convention of Human Rights - which is legislation by the EU that is enforcable in all countries in the EU. i'm pretty sure one or two sections in that Act refer to "freedom of religion" or "respect for religion".
it's all a bit crazy and France and Germany and most other major EU countries tend to ignore the provisions they don't like (which is illegal, but who's going to challenge them?). the UK could see this coming which is why we've kept out of it slightly (eg. we haven't started using the European Currency yet).
i could tell you all about how they get foreigners to represent their countries at football and stuff, but i'm sure not very many people are interested in it (eg. Portugal have some Brazilian players and France have a load of African players etc. it's nuts - Scotland, however, always play Scots ... which is probably why we're crap).
