In 'The God Gene,' geneticist Dean Hamer says human spirituality may have an innate genetic component to it. Interview by Laura SheahenDean Hamer is a molecular biologist at the National Institutes of Health, where he heads the Gene Structure and Regulation section at the National Cancer Institute. In his latest book, Hamer says certain brain chemicals affect higher consciousness and spirituality, and that the actions of these chemicals are linked to a gene his team has researched. He spoke to us recently about "The God Gene: How Faith Is Hardwired into Our Genes."I always wondered this myself as there are a lot of spiritual people in my family, but we are all of different faiths. (okay, different Christian denominations except me and a few others) So I decided to take a stroll onto beliefnet and lo and behold. Any thoughts?

I believe there is no actual "faith" gene, but the genetic components of behavior would culture secular or religious paths.

I don't buy it. I mean, I can understand somethings about science's ability to predict or find the determing factors that make up who you are, but as far as how deep your faith goes, that is left up to the individual to develop.

Homosexuality Gene, Nicotine Gene, Alcohol Gene and now ladies and gentlemen the Faith Gene!
Seems like everything has a Gene any more. But how does one prove the gene? Since the 'alcohol gene' has been found in both alcoholics and non drinkers alike...
What is next, a stupidity gene?

And what Polytheist says is what the other half of me thinks. Everything is all in the genes huh? lol But I think it's good to always remain skeptical and not choose one over the other, but rather to analize both spiritual and scientific concepts together...to see which one makse the most sense to you.

i beleive everyone has that sort of spiritual longing for God deep down inside even if they dont ever relise it even if they died not knowing it and so i think its very possible for a spiritual dream
