Supposedly rats are more intelligent than dogs. Someone I know was able to get their rat to come when they call. I mean, maybe that doesn't qualify, but I thought it would be interesting to discuss.

Well, it depends on the rat and the dogs. There are certain dogs I know who classify in the same league as single celled animals for intelligence. I'd say rats are much more cunning.

I have two dogs and two cats. Both dogs come when they are called. Neither cat will.
So by the presented logic, dogs are smarter than cats.
Funny that, since both dogs will roll in feces and dead animals, something I believe is rather stupid, and neither cat rolls in either.
So by the same logic cats are smarter than dogs.
Damn. Now I am confused!

Sometimes it seems cats are more intelligent than people. I don't think it is really possible to measure the intelligence of an animal, but sometimes its a wide enough gap that its obvious.

Hmm... I think the coming when you call thing is more of a loyalty thing than an intelligence thing, now that I think about it...

Yeah, I was thinking that too....... Granted, the fact that they can understand it shows exceptional intelligence, though it is in no way unique.

Imagine if dogs could talk. I wonder what they would sound like or what they would say.

Say what you will about rats being smarter, but I'll cuddle with a dog anyday over a nasty rat. And if they are smarter, they still apparently don't use what they've got to outrun my dogs when they catch them in the fields sometimes.
Now, which one's smarter, the mouse or the cat, hmmmmmmmm.....

Well, rats are a bit different than mice. Mice can be quite stupid. Plus, dogs are designed to catch mice and rats, so its more than intelligence.

I'd say it depends on the breed of the dog.

To me it has more to do with breath than breed.

Well, rats are a bit different than mice. Mice can be quite stupid. True, but I love mice anyway b/c they're cute and easy to take care of.

I have two dogs and two cats. Both dogs come when they are called. Neither cat will. So by the presented logic, dogs are smarter than cats. That depends on how you look at the situation. Dogs who come when they are called could be thought of as blindly obedient. I find that cats generally know their names, most just don't come when they're called because they don't care. They've got better things to do. Heh. My cat usually comes when he's called though. We think he may be part dog.
