Depends entirely upon the reasons why you want one.
My father has the "Desert Eagle" series and of them I would personally want a 40 cal. However my uncle prefers his 9mm.
So it depends upon so many different factors that I would need more information in order to make an even half way decent recomendation.

Well I'm looking mostly to put holes in tin cans and the odd Barney stuff animal. I also am not willing to bet my life and my family’s safety on no one ever in the next 30-40 years trying to kidnap rape kill etc. one of us. I’m going to try and get a few good rifles a shot gun and such, but a pistol can be carried discretely and be ready should there be a problem.

Whatever weapons you decide upon make for sure that you have the proper permits for your area. Also make sure you know the laws concerning use of said weapons not only in your area, but in any area that you might take the weapon.
I mention this because my father got into some hot water taking his 40 cal pistol from one state to another and the laws in the new state indicated that he had to have additional permits.

Yes some of that gets annoying apparently the gun laws don’t infringe on my right they just regulate manipulate and toy with it so much that it becomes too big of a bother for most people.
I'm in Idaho and a lot of people here grew up with a rifle rack in the back of the pickup, but I'd have to be very careful if I went very far east.

Colt 45 1911
If you are looking for your families protection. 45 Caliber means you knock them down and don't keep walking.

Thanks for the tips.
I'm not sure which why you are asking, but as far as taking a gun back East the laws (except Florida) get stricter the father East you go. (California is has rather strict gun laws for a west coast state).
In Taxes you can just have a gun because it is your right and you want to protect yourself and most people are okay with that. You get way back East and a lot of people think that idea is crazy and that only bad guys need a gun.

You can carry a concealed weapon in Ohio. You have to take a class and pass a test before you can do so.

Hey I did some on-line work, read the posts that have been put up and also talked to a few friends etc.
Anyhow I went to an outdoor store the other day and looked at the Glock 30. It is really cool looking the company has a really good rep and the gun is about a safe a weapon as can be made. My fiancé could not get the action all the way back so there is no way a young child could load a round in the chamber. The firing pin is also internal so the gun can not be fired unless the trigger is pulled (which requires triggering the safety built into the trigger). Long story short I think I’ve found the gun for me.
Thanks for the help.
