Okay, I've had a bundle of sage for quite some time. It was a present given to me by a friend. Anyway, I was just wondering, where the hell do I burn it?! I've been to two events where I've seen the sage burning and both times I've seen them being burnt in shells. Do I have to find and/or purchase one to have a place to burn it? Where can I burn it? And you know, I've never bothered to ask...

Oh yes, I love the smell of sage, but I need someplace to burn it. I have an inscense holder, but I don't want to use it. It's too narrow and doesn't seem like a good idea.

Hi Tara, As long as you are not disturbing people, you can burn the sage anywhere you like and at any time. You can burn it in an abalone shell, but an ashtray works just as well if you do not have a shell on hand. www.mountainvalleycenter.com/store/html/smudge.htmThat website has a list of products you might be interested in. I purchased the book "Sacred Sage How It Heals" at a Native American store not too long ago. It includes instruction for how to conduct a smudging ceremony, the medicinal uses of sage, etc. Sue

That's what I saw! Are you sure? What if all I have available is a glass astray, can I use that? (Sorry for the stupid questions) Hmmm... sounds interesting. Although I'd rather spend my money on a book that has info for various different herbs...

Yes, you can use a glass ashtray. It doesn't really matter, just as long as you do not place the burning sage in a flammable/meltable container or something.

Well, one time, I did burn something in a glass and BOOM! It shattered. It was a good thing I was in the bathroom. ;D

one of my friends made some cups of tea for some people and poured the boiling hot tea into glasses ... fortunately we poured them out into mugs before the glasses shattered.

It depends. If it's not really on fire (which should be the case) I do it by hand (as in I hold the bundle and burn it that way). It gives me a lot more control over where the smoke goes. Now be weary, burning sage smells a lot like pot smoke (yes, I know what that smells like, big shocker), so Dependant upon who knows what you're burning, you may want to be careful when you burn it.

In your hand?! Well, I prefer burning sage outside. I find it a little too strong inside.

Ok. I've got myself a nice shell. Not to big, not to small. Now my next problem (and it's a really stupid one I can imagine) is keping the sage lit. I've seen some people struggle with it. But stupid me never asked nor payed much attention. Do I have to keep feeding it with oxygen or waht?
Why didn't I just get inscense sticks instead? lol
