first off, a flatmate is probably what americans would call a roommate - except we don't call them that in the UK because we don't actually share a bedroom (also a flat is just another word for an apartment). anyway, i want to tell you about my flatmate because i can't figure out how to get through to him ...
it seems that if i tell him about this awesome new band and give him a few songs to listen to, he'll listen once and decide they aren't that great, but then someone else will come along and tell him to listen to them and suddenly they're the best thing since sliced bread ... the same goes for films (ie. films that i download) and tv shows ...
he seems to be quite depressed and lonely most of the time. he tells me about this girl he likes (he might even be more obsessive than me about these things - and that's saying something ) and how much he enjoys her company except she's got a boyfriend etc. i try and offer advice but he doesn't seem to listen, as if he thinks he is the only one who has these sorts of problems. he was trying to figure out how to tell her he liked her and i was pleading with him to tell her face to face or at least over the phone, but no, he ends up sending an e-mail (how lame is that?)
it's a bunch of stuff like that, he just seems to think he's the only one who has problems and he seems to think that his are so much bigger than anyone else's and nobody can say anything to make him feel better.
i've tried talking to him about philosophy and stuff but he's not interested - his mum was of the opinion that "what's for you won't go past you" and whenever i suggest new ways of looking at life he just quotes that at me and isn't interested in anything new ...
i guess he's pretty narrow-minded, but what can i do? he won't listen to me ...
