lots of people think that scots are tight-fisted with their money but personally i've never known this to be the case and it's pretty much the only stereotype about scots that i don't like
orkney and the highlands are very hard to reach so it's not surprising that fuel is expensive way up there. also, i imagine the petrol stations are pretty remote, so obviously the petrol station is going to charge as much as they can get away with (are you really going to get a ferry off the island to fill your car up with petrol which is only slightly cheaper?) shopkeepers always give me the correct change (even when i'm absolutely plastered) but then again i've never been to shetland and orkney, so you might be right the only time i've been short changed recently was one of my friends who worked in sainsbury's who short changed me a whole £10. he was talking to my friend who i was with and must have mistook my £20 note for a £10 note and gave me change accordingly - i didn't even notice till i got home, then i told him about it and we decided to go halfers on the difference seeing as he would have had to pay the £10 out of his own pocket (he offered to do this, but i didn't want to accept it seeing as we were both at fault, really - him for short-changing me and me for not paying attention at the time - not tightfisted at all, eh?)
chavs are called neds up here and they are unfortunately extremely common on the west coast. there are a lot of a moshers too (thats what we call people who listen to rock music and dress like skaters, dunno if that's a scottish word though) and i used to be one (sort of still am, to an extent) but most over 18s are what you would probably class as "normal" (or still neds ... ).
i don't think they would deep fry plastic and i don't remember any haggis i've eaten coming in a plastic bag (though i never took much notice at the time) but i'm no chef, so i dunno
