I've not played Sims or Sims2, but I was into city 2k and farm from some time.
Anyways if you want to talk addiction you must try a massive on line role-playing game. Like Star Wars Galaxies or World of Warcraft I used to log about 30 hrs a week on those things while in school full time and working part time.
I just cheeked out the Sims 2 site and yea it does look intense.

SimCity 2k and 3k were pretty good. I really want to try 4k though. ;D I've played SimAnt. That was really fun. I thought it was really funny when my ant would die becuase of the lawnmower. And I remember how cool it was to infest someone's house and all the ant wars. Who would have thought that a game about being an ant would have been so much fun? lol gotta love Maxis for that. And as for online games, the only game I played online (besides petty arcarde games) was Starcraft. I too spent about 30hrs a week playing with people from various places. But I think people can be SO RUDE on there as well. So I usually try to keep quiet and make few mistakes, especially when it comes to team cooperation. But generally, that game is addicting too. ;D

There's a new expansion pack for the Sims 2. It's called Sims 2: Open For Business. They can use their talents to create toy stores and all sorts of businesses. You can even hire and fire certain staff. Isn't that cool? lol I still have yet to have my sims fully live out their nighlife dreams! There are certain sims I want to make vampires b/c it turns their partners on. Unfortunately you can't create vampires in the Create Sims screen. You have to get bit. I've witnessed it once and man was that cool.
