My sense of smell is too keen I think... scents always seem to give me a headache. I prefer natural smells like vanilla or cinnamon. I like the mild floral scents like lavendar or light rose. I like musks too... but the stronger fragrances in perfumes, candles, incense are too much. I'm getting used to incense in Mass but I still sit pretty far back so it's not too strong.

Yeah, I find that a problem. Especially when I burn oils. I spoke to the lady at the mystickal shop I go to for them and she said it's ideal to put water. But I thought that was kinda odd b/c water and oil don't mix. So I went to some mystickal sites and found that plain oil is best for the scent isn't as strong.

Smells not programmed initially into the human brain (unnatural, or unimportant) smell good or bad based on our initial experience in which we smelled the paticular substance. If we were positive, it is a good smell; negative, bad. Personally, I like the smell of rosewater....persians use it alot as a perfume and culinary ingredient. So you're saying that if you were in a bad mood, and someone put a rose under your nose, you'd think it smelled bad? And if you were in a good mood, and smelled a decaying animal, that would smell good? Where do you get this stuff?

It's only natural for most things. That's why when I let people test out music, I make sure they're in a good mood before I do it. ;D Let's say for example, someone close to you has died and they loved...let's say...lilacs. And they had lilacs everywhere in their house. You would soon associate lilacs with their love of lilacs. (Okay, so it may not be the exact scenario you're looking for, and the music example could be pretty bad, but I think it's similar).
Try it sometime. If you watch people, you'll see this happening.

That's true. I can't stand raspberry spray. It was used in the funeral home where my grandfather was. Every time I smell that kind of fragrance something in me wants to get away from it. I don't know if my brain associates that smell with death or not, but it seems to.

I agree incense can sometimes be too strong; I got this incense called "Surya" (sun) and it smelled good in the box, but horrible when I burned it. At first I thought a mouse had died in my walls (you know that really bad and distinctive smell), but when it cleared, I realized it was the incense.

incense really can be too strong, and my brother has severe asthma so i have to be very very careful. I have one of those febreeze scent stories and I love that and it doesn't seem to kick up his asthma.

Speaking of burning things...I love Sage. But when I wanted to burn it...forget it. Perhaps it's because it was at the begining of the bundle...I don't know. I was thinking of trying it again. Maybe I will and let it burn a little longer this time...

I just got some aloe vera incense that smells really nice; it's kind of light and not sickeningly sweet either.

I went to a handfasting yesterday and the Priestess burnt sage and purified each and every one of us. It smells good after all. I also realized I was burning it wrong. (as the bundle, not individual pieces). That's what happens when you get gifts with no instructions. lol

I saw something similar elsewhere, but I thought it would be cool to share here. What kinds of scents do you associate with the various seasons? for example, for Spring, it's the scent of various flowers (such as liacs) and the scent after a rainfall. For the summer, it's a similar thing. I like the smell of flowers and greenery. Fall/Aumtumn I like the smell of apples and other kinds of fall crops cooking. In the Winter it's the scent of evergreen and minty things. I'm sure my liking for different kinds of things at the different seasons are also affected by some holidays as well.

how can you like the smell of petrol? yukk! coffee's probably my favourite smell. my dad goes to a specialist caffeinist (that's a new word i coined - like a tobacconist but for coffee ) every now and then to stock up on kenyan coffee. he brings it back in paper bags full of it and it smells so so strong. one time we got the train and everyone in the carriage could smell it, it was great

Hi everyone! Thought I would throw mine in here. My favs are roses, lavender and chamomile, and the Magnolia and Orange Blossom Downy. Well, I like just about anything when it comes to fresh, clean laundry.
Which scents remind me of each season? Spring-fresh cut grass summer-tanning oil from all my summers on the beaches growing up fall-pumpkins pie, apple pie...and cinnamon winter-fire places, peppermint and hot cocoa
